off topic brake system

on my honda
gotta drive it 527 miles back to sacto in 2 days
and when I brake at slow speeds it sounds like air is coming out of somewhere
diagnosis?
I asked google but all he did was try to sell me some new brakes

Sounds like the brake booster is leaking. Disconnect & plug the hose going to it and see if the noise goes away. If it does you can drive it like that until you get it fixed, but you won't have power assist for the brakes, so the pedal will be harder to press.

thats gonna suck seeing as its raining and my garage full of tools is really far away
you wouldnt happen to know what tools I would need would you

If anything I would deal with the noise and not worry about disconnecting anything unless for diag purposes. The post above was talking about disconnecting the vacuum line though. That vacuum line goes to the big can (booster) that is directly behind the master cylinder at the firewall.

I would imagine you probably have a leak in the vacuum diaphragm inside the brake booster or problem in the valve that dumps vacuum when pressing the brake pedal. When you press the brake pedal a valve opens to vent vacuum off the back side of the diapragm, sometimes this makes a quick hiss or whoosh sound but the sound should go away if you stop moving the brake pedal. If the noise is continuous when holding the pedal down then the booster is bad.

so my vote is always just troup on until I end up on the side of the road
I mean I'm far from my garage and dont have a whole lot of money here
what are my odds of making it over 500 miles

Well really its just a vacuum leak while the brake pedal is pressed, unless its hissing when you let off the pedal too. The worst case is the booster will completely fail meaning you will have no power assist. I am sure at some point you have probably driven/stopped something without assist on a power brake setup. If not you better be ready to stand on the brake pedal if need be. In all actuality it probably will make it just fine, but just be careful in case you need to make a sudden stop.

I have seen boosters last for 1k miles plus making hissing noise. Run it till you can fix it

made it home just fine.
the leaking hissing braking release whatever noise has stopped
and my brakes are doing just fine
