Been rolling this thought around in my head for a while know. Tell me what y'all think.
I'm thinking that the current paint, pings , dents and surface rusted body could really look good if done correctly. Smooth the surface out a little with a light sanding then add a preservation coat of a dull clear coat. Or a light gloss maybe? I don't want it to be another high dollar polished with diapers show car. That would take all the fun out of it. A decent interior, clean undercarriage and engine bay is a must though. Idk. Share some input. Give me some ideas.
how bad is the current clear or whats left of it? If it's still there or if it's a single stage i say cut and buff it and see how it does.
It could be buffed out but the bare metal/surface rust will need to be sealed. Trying to match the paint or clear coat would be impossible. Easier to just shoot the whole car. Through the buddy system I could get a really good deal on straightening the body and a full paint. Then I would be taping up the rear quarters, staying away from certain trees, and all that nonsense that comes with clean lines and mirror like paint. I been going through that with the Caddy for the last 15 years. Took all of the fun out of the car and it's almost time to paint it again. I will be at the garage in early November. Will get some good body shots if weather permits. Give a better idea of what I'm working with.
If it's that bad i say shoot it with a single stage that is close to the current color and not worry about waxing and buffing it constantly. wax it every few months and be done. my truck is getting a single stage paint but with extra "wet" additive. I need to figure out if i want to put emblems back on it or say screw it and fill the holes in and only have the front oval and the rear FORD letters on the truck. The color of the paint is very very close to OEM but with more metallic and "clear". Paint is however last on the list of things to do. getting the engine running the best it can be with what i have and doing the suspension are the top priorities.

Yeah. I'm going with sealing the paint up as is. Downside is I either need to sell or drag around with me the replacement doors, fender and rear quarter panel. I started working on the grille again. Got one headlight door ready for paint. Everything else just needs to be sanded and cleaned. Doing all of that in my living room and kitchen sink. It's great to be single. Haven't decided on paint or paint scheme yet. Could go black with chrome colored paint? Leave it the way it is?Seal it up as is? Flat black? Going to study some pictures of other cars.
