Engines for a 1980 Jeep Cherokee Laredo?
Hello all,
I might have a chance to purchase a 1980 Jeep Cherokee Laredo but it does not have an engine. I have been a fan of the AMC 401 V8 and am thinking of having one put in, but just in case I was curious what other engines would work for this Cherokee? I would prefer either a 401 V8 or better or a diesel engine.
Thanks all!

Back in the 80's, I had a 78 Cherokee, and looked into other engine options. Turns out a 500 cu in Caddy engine would fit. You'd have to check what transmission and bellhousing connections you have. But the guy who had it said it bolted right up. So I suppose it had a turbohydramatic of some sort as standard equipment, perhaps connected to a GM 350 small block. Seeing as these are all pre smog engines with no computer issue, all you'll have to worry about will be the engine size. A 500 Caddy engine will give you all the torque you could ask for.
