Ok so heres the story. My buddy ran into some money a few months ago and bought a 66 Mustang California special to restore on a whim. Of course since he bought it both him and i are gonna be tearing into this thing.. its just kinda what we do. So far we've took it down to bear metal (this wasnt fun, took about 12 hours of sanding to realize we were too impatient to sand off 13 coats of paint, so we went and bought some aircraft remover. Stuff stripped it to bear metal in about 30 min) Anyways, with most of the body work and rust fixed, it was about time we started working on an engine for the thing. It came with the stock 289 which was far from useable, and a (70's?) model 302 that came in the car. After fiddling with that thing for about a week straight to no aveil we finally decided to go the FI 5.0 route. My buddy just happens to own a mid 90's model Mercury Grand Marquis with a very good running fuel injected 5.0 in it, so seems we have a good candidate lined up.
So for my question, anyone ever done this in a 64.5-66 mustang? Probably gonna start on the swap here in the next 2-3 weeks, or whenever we get the engine lift back. The only thing we see being a hassle is the wiring harness, so my question is (if you had to do it again) would you modify the stock harness or buy a painless wiring kit?

Def do the painless harness.. Never want to reuse a harness that may of had problems to start with.. Money well spent in aftermarket harness..

Also 1st place at SEMA in CA..

I used factory mass air harness, eec off 89-02 5.0 mustang.Cheaper than painless kit,but will take effort to clean, pin out.

Would love to have those wheels on my chero!Good luck with swap.

Mustang harness is not complicated,no need to delete any wires.Make sure your donnor engine is a roller cam.(firing order)
Fuel delievery system upgrade was bigest PIA.This swap has been done many times on mustangs and tons of info on web.
