1999 vortec 7.4 distributor alignment

1999 vortec 7.4 distributor alignment
I am trying to install the distributor back in to my express 3500 with the 7.4.
I understand the top dead center of the compression stroke part but im confused about which way the rotor should be facing when the engine is at TDC.
Which way should the rotor be facing? From what i read it should face the cylinder 1 contact on the cap.
What about the gap marked 8 on the distributor under the rotor? I think i read the rotor should be pointing toward that too.
It cant be pointed both places so which way should the rotor be facing at TDC?
