I really want one to play with!! To work on and tinker with, etc.. They look really easy to work on and upgrade. ANyway I found a 78 with an AMC 5.0 and a tremec three speed. 130k, looks in nice condition, no rust, loads of new parts. He wants 5200 for it. How is this engine? I know my father always swore by tremec transmissions, but know nothing about the history of these motors. And is there anything else I should know about cj5's?

I have a '78 CJ-5 myself my ongoing project, it's got a 258 inline 6 in it and a t-150 three speed. The 304 (5.0) amc is more desirable and from what I understand the tranny Is a tough one. 78 was a good year for the 5, it got front discs standard and the frame is stronger than earlier ones. Check it real good for frame cracks especially where the steering box and springs mount. Rust free is a BIG bonus. Probable won't have power brakes or ac, but should be easy to work on and very rugged.

My CJ5 is also a 78 with the 258 with the bigger Carter 1bbl off a Ford 300, Granny geared T-18 4 speed, Dana 20 transfer, and 3.43 gears. Its my fun toy but wife thinks its a death trap on the road.
