The 46re is stronger than the 42re. I was wrong about the 46re being behind all V8's, it was only behind the 98 5.9 V8. The things to check on the transfercase are the input shaft length and spline count. It can be easily changed, but it would be better to find a case with the correct shaft. ZJ's came with either an NP249 (junk), the NP242 (good, but limited aftermarket support), and the NP231. Almost all of the V8 ZJ's had the 249.
