hi, im looking to buy a 96 grand cherokee off of someone that is stuck in third gear. seems like a stupid easy fix to me. it has 155,000 on it. they changed the fluid and filter in it and he said the fluid is still red. the jeep has a 4.0 in it. it has select trac 4x4. im thinking that the TV cable needs adjusted but i obviously havent looked at it yet. if you guys could list some possible reasons its doing this, it would be appreciated. thanks.

 

that could be a lot of different problems. might not even be anything wrong with the transmission at all. it could be a as simple as a tps or it could need a transmission rebuild.

 

Doubt it is the cable. Alot of times when the Transmission comp. goes out it will start in third. If you want one I got one out of a 1996 GC 4.0. If you can shift it manually fine it is probably the tcm. pm me if you want the one I got.
