ZJ Tranny
My '96 ZJ is sticking in 2nd gear sometimes... Can let off of it just a hair & she will shift on out fine. Local tranny shop wants almost $400 to change out 2 solenoids that he says "may be causing it". That seems awfully high for a possible fix. Anyone have any advise?

Governor pressure solenoid and output speed sensor are the two most common faults with that trans. Has any other work been down to it and has the trans shop checked the actual output governor pressure with a guage?

It has nothing to do with how quickly the problem can be found. It has everything to do with a Tech taking the time to find the issue and not give you some BS "this might fix it" line thats just poor work and bad business no excuse for crap like that. It gives mechanics a bad name, even more so after you spend 400 and they tell you it's going to cost more.

Congratulations on your 2nd post.
If this is a high mileage trans 145000+ then even if the tech is right with his diagnosis, it may already be to late because debris from the excessively overheated 2nd gear band may have already plugged up some of the ports in the solenoids and valve body.

That would be fine but a good tech would pull the pan and look at the fluid and valve body and know before hand if that is an issue. Or even be able to see the metal in the pan and just tell you you need a rebuild. That "This might fix it" is crap diag. Theres no excuse for that in a professional shop.

$30 for filter & fluid? That guy said $30 for just the filter, then another $60 just for fluid... Trannies are one thing that I have never had much experience with, but that seemed awfully high to me. And it has 153,000 miles on it.

Try another shop for the filter and fluid change, get prices. We get about 89.00 for a trans tune up(filter fluid and band adjustment) extra for syn fluid
It is an easy do it yourself job though.
