ZJ Front Axle Issue
I am getting some bad noise from my driver side front axle, and pretty sure its the U-joint, the boot is tore up.. I have done some research and some say the whole axle assembly has to be replaced, others say the U joints can be replaced. Anyone had any experience in this field, or could give me advice or directions let me know. Its a 94 Grand Cherokee 5.2 4x4
Thanks
Thanks

You say "boot" so then you must be talking about the CV axleshaft because theres no boot on a u-joint. Yes, you must replace the entire axleshaft but they are pretty cheap and easy to do.

Yup just pulled it apart and the shaft is just clangin around in there. So what now, pull the caliper , then rotor and slide the shaft out and replace or what?

i'm pretty sure you can swap that cv shaft out with a u-joint shaft.
that's what i would do. don't replace it with another crappy cv unit.
just go to the junkyard and grab a shaft from another zj or xj and replace the u-joint with a new one just so you know it's good.
look for one with the larger 297 joint. (later model xj's and zj's)
as for replacing, remove wheel, caliper and rotor and 36mm hub nut. then pull the hub by removing the three 12pt bolts on the back of the hub unit and remove the hub and shaft.
replace in reverse order torquing bolts/hub nut to spec. 75ft/lbs and 175 respectively.
