I have a 95 Grand Cherokee Laredo Limited with the 4.0L and auto tranny 4x4. What years transmissions are a direct swap? Or what years Grand Cherokees will the engine go in? (Direct swap) Thanks, skonk.
P.S. Engine is fresh rebuild with less than 100 miles on it and the tranny went to crap. Torque converter?

 

Always replace the torque converter when replacing a transmission, a lot of crap can collect in the torque converter and you can never get it all out. 93 and a half to 95 42re transmissions with the 4.0 bolt patern will bolt in. The 4.0 will bolt in with no mods in 93 to 95 ZJs, and 91-95 XJs. With some minor mods the 95 4.0 will work in ZJs and XJs all the way up to 99.

 

You need to reference the build date. There are two different 42RE transmissions for that year. Either prior to 1/13/95 0r after 1/14/95. I'm trying to find one now. If anyone knows the difference between these transmissions, please enlighten me. If the build date is prior to 1/13/95 as is mine, a 93,94 0r early 95 is supposedly a direct swap. I have no data on the 1/14/95 and later.
