Default Why Why Why...

would jeep make two different 4.0L in 99? I have a 4.0L from a 99 cherokee and i was going to put in my 99 grand cherokee which also has a 4.0L that is bad but it seems to be different. Has anyone been able to do the swap? Thanks

The motor itself is the same. But some of the bolt on components mounted different.

Is it just the air cond mounting that is different? and is there away around it?

swap mounts.


Tear the engine down to the long block and transfer all the stuff from 1 to the other.

I wish it was that easy but the G/Cherokee engine has two mountings for the A/C compressor that are cast into the block on the bottom left side and the cherokee engine does not.

Will the AC mount in the upper position. See Chrysler stupidly mounted the XJ alternator at the bottom and the ac compressor in the upper location. They did change this for the ZJ and swapped the mounting locations.

My 97 ZJ 4.0 alt location is the same as my 96 XJ 4.0. I believe it was the WJ that they changed the location of the alt.
