Default What transfer case/ auto trans ?

Have a 97 ZJ with 4.0 auto. trying to figure out what transfer case and auto trans are in this G Cherokee. I has Select-Trac 4WD. All stock otherwise. Reason asking is may need tor replace T Case due to bad bearings, I guess bearing replacement ( input /output) in the T case is not feasible ?
How big a job is it for swap out?

you probably have the 242 t case. if you can go into 2wd you do (unless it was swapped out to a 231 by a po) if its full time 4wd, neutral, or 4wd low then its a 249 t case

242 transfer case with a 42re trans. The transfer case is fully rebuildable but it would probably be cheaper to find another one and swap it out. I would look for a 242 out of a 97/98 with 4.0 and the spline count should be the same, but if yours is out just count the splines and other years might work.

It is not too difficult to change it out. Get yourself a Chilton's and follow the steps

Thanks,
Wonder if it turns out I have a bad bearing in the front output or bad pinion bearing in diff could I run the GC w/o the front driveshaft for a while?
Would this work or doesn't matter the bad bearing will keep spinning.
I am trying to gather solutions before tearing into it at a later date.

you can pick a 242 around here for a couple of hundred. 231s bring a little more.
