Looks like I'm not going to be able to do anything but look at my jeep until Sunday. Will check all fluids, change engine oil and any other fluids as needed, and lube chassis.
Have been looking for tow hooks, anyone have an extra set of ZJ front tow hook mounting brackets?

Absolutely incorrect. Once water mixes with engine oil (chocolate milk looking gunk) or trans fluid (Pepto-Bismol looking stuff) it will NOT evaporate out.

Checked engine and trans today, no signs of water in either. Hoping to find an obvious electrical issue this weekend when I get a chance to get underneath it.

Too much water in the oil could cause the oil to aerate which would cause a dramatic loss of oil pressure.
Either way, no contaminated oil for me

i did this once to except it was a pond in the sand dunes, the water was just at the lip of the hood and about halfway up to my knees when i was sitting in it. i got it home drained the water from the inside... and bought a truck.... a couple weeks later i drained all the fluids rear Diff, front diff, t-case, motor oil, and i had the trans fluid "professionaly Pumped" no way to drain the torque converter. and now with a anoying motor tick she's back on the road
My sister's grand Cherokee had the same shifting problems yours is having. We changed 2 solenoid's in the tranny pan. If changing Tranny fluid doesn't help, let me know.
Newb- 3600 posts huh?? Pulling the plugs on an engine that already ran 60 miles, totally useless.

So I drove the ZJ home tonight. First time I've driven it more than a couple blocks since I went puddle swimming.
I'm 99.9% sure the problem is electrical. More specifically with the trans selector switch. Today I noticed that the neutral safety wasn't working in P. I found if I wiggled the shifter it would start working. In addition, if I wiggle in drive and hit the right spot the trans will shift normally in all gears. More wiggling and it will act up. Tomorrow I will be crawling underneath and cleaning all connectors and whatever else I find that needs attention.

And as far as cleaning the connections, after their clean I'd throw some dielecyric grease in there to help water proof them.

Please explain how water would survive in the combustion chamber for 60 miles. Of course he needs to change the oil but you said spark plugs.
You would think that with you being here to get that many posts you would at least have some knowledge, but I guess not.

Just took my zj wheelin last night myself. Blasting mud like a mad man tryin to show off. Tranny sucked water, slipping like a *****.. Did a service this morning, fluid came out pink and milky. Filter was caked, magnet was coated with slime. Goes into gear again, doesn't slip, but won't come out of first. When it does, it stays in second. I have another tranny, just really don't feel like swinging yet another one!!! Gonna douche the valve body and see what happens

Wow, you got it a lot worse than I did. Just got in from messing with the ZJ. Got underneath it and only connectors I found on the trans is the neutral safety switch and speed sensor. The connectors were 100% clean inside.
Changed my oil and checked all the fluids, no water contamination in anything :-)
Air filter needs replacing, filter box had some mud inside, I think the snorkel was barely in the water and allowed some in the box, but the filter showed no signs of being wet. I took the box out and cleaned all the mud out.
Sprayed down the engine (again) and had at least another 40lbs. Of mud on the driveway... now have spent more time cleaning mud than I spent driving in it.
Trans seems to be acting normal. Never had any codes.
Other than not starting in Park, does the Neutral safety switch have any other affect on trans operation?
