First things first, without any information on your cherokee your going to receive zero information. A check engine light can mean anything. Give us some information about your xj and lets go from there.

Hi XJ, its an 1998 grand jeep cherokee limited 4.0 litre... I was out checking engine again just now and looked at my screen on dash and it said i need service as its rundown to 0000 miles...Would that be the reason the engine light came on?

No. My service reminder has been blinking at me for a little while now and no check engine light. It just counts down on a user set interval to remind you to take it in for fluid changes.

Go somewhere where they can read the diagnostic codes from the computer. It'll probably point to a bad sensor or something else.

service reminder and check engine light have nothing to do with each other. as previsously stated, take it somewhere and get the code read. probably something simple if it runs and drives fine...

9/10 times it's a sensor. Nothing major take it to any parts house Auto Zone, O'Reilly they will scan the code and tell you what it is.

May be coincidental, but he stated it counted down to service. Can't say about
the Cherokee, but my wifes grand prix would have the service soon light come on
when it was due for an oil change. Best bet would to be to have the codes read and go from there.
