I bought my son his first vehicle last week. A 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0l with 202,000 miles. The thing runs excellent. No indications of any fluid leaks. Plenty of throttle response, etc, etc, etc. We haven't put it on the road yet. But I did notice something that has me here asking.

The transfer case select lever is in the 2wd position. But the light on the dash that says "part time" is lit. Now from what I have read this light should be on if the transfer case is in the 4wd part time setting. I have shifted the transfer case through all ranges. Driven forward and backward in each position and that light still stays on when in 2wd.

I want this vehicle to be as reliable as possible for him. And I don't want to put it on the road until I find out what the problem may be.

 

Does the part time light stay on while you shift through ALL the ranges?? When you shift into 4 LO does it still say part time?? And when you shift the transfer case level can you feel the GCL go in and out of the lower ranges?

 

It goes out when in 4hi & 4lo. Stays on in 2wd & part time It doesn't "feel" like it's in 4wd when in 2wd and the light is on.
