Default Tracking down front axle noise

I have a whine from my front axle. I think its the pinion bearing. Someone has suggested I remove the front driveshaft to hel ptrack down the noise. If I remove the front drive shaft is it OK to drive round for a while? If it is the pinion bearing will the noise go away with the shaft removed? I guess not as the pinion will still be turning.
Oh, its a 2000 GC V8 with quadra-drive transmission.

you can take out the front DS on the QD but i would NOT leave it out for long, while theres no VC in the 247 case it is still not good for it. Having said that,i don't see how thats going to help locate the noise unless the noise is coming from the DS itself because everything will still be spinning.

The mechanic used the following procedure to isolate a noise on my '97 ZJ. With an assistant in the Jeep, and it on a frame lift, it was brought up to speed while the mechanic listened with a stethoscope from below to the various points of the Jeep until he found the offending problem. Seemed like a very logical approach to me.
