Default Is there any way to read engine codes without a scanner?

For example, on my old ford there was a method where you could get the cluster to make the CEL blink and then you could match that sequence to a chart and figure out what the code was.

The reason I ask is because I have a CEL and i've been going back and forth for weeks trying to get it scanned here and there. Autozone apparently doesn't have OBD1 scan tools. Pep Boys does but whoever is in possession of it never seems to be working when I go there. I've had enough! I would just buy a scanner but since I have both OBD1 and 2 cars, a tool would cost me like $200!

I'm 99% sure it's an O2 sensor anyway...since it takes a couple of minutes to come on after you start the vehicle and i'm getting reduced gas mileage, but I want to be sure.

Not sure since I don't have a GC, but yes, some OBD-I Jeeps have a "key on key off" trick to show codes. I don't remember the trick either.

Search, though, it'll be an easy find.

Don’t be such a tight-wad, this scanner (which is of the type I’d buy) costs less than US$45 including p&p.

Although Chrysler/Jeep is not mentioned – the protocols listed cover those used by Jeep.

I reckon the above is a good $45 investment for any Jeep owner whose vehicle has on board diagnostics.
