Hello, I am new here but not to off roading. I have had several cjs in the past and as I get older I am looking towards getting a grand cherokee to take riding. On suspension systems what brands seem to hold up better? I am thinking of running a 33" tire, how much lift will I need?

I would stick with 31 for now if you are offroading, get alot more flex...

I have 31, about 4 inches of lift, and trimmed bumpers, I still rub off road. I did a front to rear lift, RE springs, zone shocks. Works great for me. LCA's or long arms in the future.

You can flex just as well or even better with bumpstops flat controll arm angles and longer shocks with 33's. Look up ktm racers low cog FAQ. The same applies for us with the coils all the way around just do the same for that back as you do the front.

33's would require about a 5-6" lift!

Not true in the least. I've seen people run 33's STOCK, You can run 33's on 3" if your willing to trim your fenders, around 4"-5" is the most you'll need to run 33's.

On my XJ I have 32" on my 4.5" lift and I had to trim a pinch.

I had 33" on my YJ with 4" lift and they rubbed. Added a 2" body to avoid rubbing.

So, yes, bigger lift or trimming needed for 33" from my experience.

I don't have experience with grand Cherokees, but I know that if I could do my xj again, I'd do a really good quality 4.5" long arm kit and bushwackers. Quality over quantity. Don't buy rough country rustys or rubicon express if you want your jeep to ride solid and last.

I would never buy bushwackers cut outs now that napier has their flares for two doors.. Things are freakin invincible and around the same price.

Wasnt naysaying, just putting that out there for anyone who would happen to come across this thread. Far to many people today believe you need a massive lift to run big tires.. Reminds me of a buddy of mine who put a 2" BB on his 6" RC lift run 33's... which he has yet to put on.

You are right. I should've prefaced my reply with, "you can fit 33's if you trim enough metal". If not, then you would need a bigger lift. The wheel wells of a WJ just won't accept a big tire.

Everyone should give this a read.

I'm on 4-4.5 of lift and I will be running 33's but only cuz I don't have wide enough wheels and I don't wanna spend the cash on them. I can fit 33's without trimming but it rubs on the back side of the fender. 33's on 3 in is food with trimming on a zj with a eh you will need 4.5 and trimming.

I really like low COG set ups. On our XJs it seems that the rear tire well is the limiting factor on tire size & lift. You just can't open the rear up as much as the front. My personal XJ is running around 5" of lift with 12.5"x 33" ProComps and our V2 fender flares. Any less lift and the tires will start hitting too hard at full flex. Keep in mind that this rig gets asked to flex to the max and wheeled fairly hard when it gets to play.
