the 4.0 is niether of them
I typed that above it because I was trying to answer a different question.

I was responding to "tech it would have to be a double over head cam one one each head" and then showing a picture of a SOHC.

Now another question....How do I tell if it's high output 265 hp or the smaller 235 hp? There is no info on the sticker in the glovebox and I don't know where else to look.

I think it's a Laredo but on the side of the Jeep it says Special Edition.
When searching for parts online, how do I know if it's a SOHC or not? What does that mean and how do I tell if that's what I have??

Thank you!
Cherokees didnt come with V8s, you have the Grande Latte Cherokee.

SOHC means Single overhead cam. Bring it to the dealership and have them simply tell you what you have.

Sohc is one cam in each head. Dohc is two cams in each head. Ohv is when the cam is in the middle of the block, also known as a pushrod engine. They didn't make a dohc 4.7, only a sohc. About 3-4 guys actually know what they are talking about. Sorry for the debate herb, go to an autozone, they will clear up the confusion for you, or simply call the dealership with the vin number and they can tell you right over the phone.

Not necessarily, the Jeep 4.0L is OHV and the cam is on the side of the block.

Welcome to CF, and you have the base 235 HP 4.7L V8. The High-Output version wasn't available in the Laredo or SE models. >->http://www.wjjeeps.com/engine.htm
You can't go by the air-filter housings, as they are easily switched.
