Hi Guys, anyone had a problem with the 4.0l petrol engine in the WJ. Mine makes what the garage have called a slappy slappy noise I say it sounds a wee bit dieselly on idle. Pulls like a train, starts fine, idles fine but the engine has a noise in it. I have checked around the pulleys, air con etc and it is IN the engine. Garage say piston slap, the car has 72k on the clock and a full service history by Jeep up to the year before I bought it. Since I bought it I've changed the oil and filter twice always using a tin of flush and semi synthetic oil. I've bought a full gallon of flushing oil to try that, but I just wondered if it was a known fault and I needed to do a certain thing to cure it. If there are no ideas I guess it's gonna be an engine rebuild - I thought your "yank tanks" ran for ever? The Mk1 Orvis has 120k on the clock and is still spot on, yet the mk2 is doing this.

 

It's a 4.0, it will make noise. But it will make that noise for 300k miles without any problems.

 

Yup, our WJ makes the same noise. Don't worry about it

 

Thanks guys, I thought it was just mine. Do you know as sad as it may seem, I've had 29 cars since driving at 17 -31 if you count motorcycles but of all of them I love this Jeep. I got rid of the landrover discovery V8 as it was best stored next to the garbage. I bought the Mk1 Orvis and gave it to my parents as they were getting rid of their Opel 4x4. Then I bought this, I love the aircon - coldest I've ever had and with this weirdo cancer it keeps me cool. I love all the toys, which actually all work, but most of all I love the noise it makes when I whack my right foot down. Any other car I'd have looked at getting rid of it, this one well my brain went "how much are the engine bits I wonder?" As I said many thanks for the replies will keep driving and grinning!
