Unhappy Shifting issues

I have been experiencing some shifting issues on my 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It has the early production 42RH 4.0L transmission and was overhauled about 2.5 years ago. Here are the symptoms: 1. When in park and jeep turned off, sometimes the jeep will creep a bit forward. I have to use my e-brake to keep that from happening. 2. When driving, the jeep will shift into 1-4 no problem but will not go into overdrive when driving over 50mph. This happened the same time that my speedometer stopped working. So I thought it must have been the speed sensor. Took the jeep in and auto mech (not tranny mech) and they noticed the wire to the speed sensor was damaged. They fixed the wire and installed a new speed sensor (which I picked up at a local parts store) BUT the new speed sensor was the wrong one and did not resolve the sifting problem but the speedometer works now. They stated that the wiring is what caused the speedometer to malfunction and that the speed sensor is fine. The sifting problem is caused by something else and I was told it was most likely the overdrive snap ring. The tranny shop (which the auo mech referred me to) wants $1,100 - $1,200 to repair the snap ring. OUCH!

Any suggestions? With my symptoms, is it really the snap ring or could it still be the speed sensor, which I was told is located INSIDE this model tranny?? If it is the speed sensor, wouldn't that make the shifting irregular? The shifting is very smooth from 1-4.

On your trans 4th gear is OD. Try using the OD button/switch to turn it off and see if it makes a difference.
You might be having an issue with the lock-up torque converter.
And Welcome to CF.
