Default roof rack crossbar and slider removal - 94Grnd Cherokee

Ok, I have done a couple of searches on these forums and I thought I would pose this question as I am stymied.

I have a Jeep 1994 Grand Cherokee that I want to remove the cross rails and slider bars for the roof rack. I have removed the three screws for each side and the cross rails, only to be left with the spring activated slider pieces that run up and down the parallel rails (some of the springs have already started coming apart causing the sliders not to stay in place). I would like to keep the parallel rails that run the full length of the vehicle.

Since this is a pre-1999 model, I suspect this is not an easy task, but short of taking everything off, I cant find a solution.

Thanks

You have to remove either the front or rear plastic end caps on the rails in order to slide the sliding part off. Be carefull not to scratch the paint when taking the end caps off.

Plus on my 98 I had these little metal round studs in the track that kept them from going to the end of the tracks, I took a flat head screw driver and hammer to the side of them and knock them out.

Welcome to CF.
This is for a '97. It should be similar for your '94. On a sunroof equipped vehicle, they won't come forward past the sunroof because of the stops.

The figure 74 of your diagram, is somewhat similar, I found one torx screw on the actual end cap, but I took it out and I could get any further as it a appears to be fastened with one of the other smaller screws for the side rail.

I thought about unscrewing the other smaller screws partially to see if maybe it might come out but didn't want to risk compromising the seal - allowing water to enter underneath the side rail. (Based on fig 74, it looks like the end cap edge should not extend to the other smaller screws - maybe 2-3" from the edge of the side rail?)

Remove the screw at the end of the rail and loosen the second to last screw in the rail, then gently pull up and the rail just enough to slide the end cap off.

Thanks, it worked like a charm. I do have another question

The rear passenger door power window switch does not work (however the driver's door control works for it), I tried replacing the switch but it still does not work. Recently I went to a pull-a-part and scavenged all the relays from underneath the glovebox, but was reading a chilton guide and it seems to suggest that this relay box does not control the windows. Does anyone have a schematic of this box? or know the answer?

Look inside that rubber sock in the door jamb for any broken wires going to that door.
