Default 94 Grand Cherokee

Hey guys,

I just bought a 94 Grand Cherokee Limited and I'm having a few issues.

1. between 2nd and 3rd gear is sticking every now and again. It seems to rev up a bit and then shift.

2. 4 AllTime. I'm not familiar with the Grand Cherokees and the all time 4 wheel drive. Should the shifter always be in the "4 AllTime" ? or Neutral?

3. The second shifter for the 4AllTime and 4 Low is very stiff. To the point I can't feel it shift "click into gear" when I move it.

4. The steering is lose, but NO death wobble. It drives down the road nice and smooth. I was thinking it needs an alignment and a new steering stabilizer.

I have only owned the Jeep for 2 days and in the middle of moving to a new place so I haven't had a chance to really get into looking at it.

Other than the above, the body is solid but has some nasty front panel rust. Floors/rockers are solid. The Hood could use replacing and some new shocks.

Any ideas or suggestions on the all time 4 wheel drive would be great.

1. V-8 or I-6?? Take a look at the fluid level and color of the transmission fluid. My V-8 did this all the time until I changed the fluid and filter, it was in cruddy shape when I got it. It drips and when I get a bit low it will do the same thing. If you have a 4-liter, you have a 42RE transmission. This is the one with a LONG history of screaming deaths. Keep enough clean fluid in it, and wait patiently for it to let go at the most inopportune time.

2. That is the NP 249 transfer case. The handle has three settings, 4wd All, N, and 4wd low. It stays in 4wd All, except when you want low range(or neutral). It uses a viscous coupler to switch the truck between 2wd and 4wd when it senses wheel slippage. That viscous coupler is another source of known issues with the early ZJ's. It will fail and leave you in 4wd all the time, wearing out CV joints, tires, etc.

3. Most ZJ's never got their T-case handles used in their lives. Lube the linkages up and work it back and forth. You will feel the difference when the Jeep is moving.

4. A stabilizer is a band aid. Check all of the other steering parts first, before spending anything on a stabilizer.

Thanks for the reply whowey, kind of hard to check the site until I get internet at home.

I have the I-6, I just finished moving into a new place and put about 300 miles on the Jeep in the last 3 days. There were only a few times the Trans acted up. Should see about changing it over to a 242? I think that is the correct number. Are there different type of other transmissions I could replace the current one with?

I'm going to take into the shop and get some new fluids put in and have the Jeep nuts that work there take a look at the steering.

The Jeep had been sitting for about 6-7 months and periodically had been started by the previous owner. Everything was very stiff when I started driving it. But it seems to be loosening up a bit now.

I was taking a look at the shocks and such today and it looks like they are still the original ones, I thinks it's time for some new ones.

EDIT:

Found some site for a NP249 to NP231 swap I'll have to measure the case and go check the local junk yards. God knows there are enough "cash for clunker" Jeeps sitting in them.

You are going to find the majority of the C4C Jeeps are gone. They were only allowed to keep them in the yard for a defined period time. Some extensions were granted for some vehicles. But most of the C4C stuff is gone now.

Early 93 ZJ's got the AW-4.. so there is that option for the tranny
