Overdrive Problems
Hello!
I am having problems with my '01 Grand Cherokee's overdrive. I have been trying to do some research, but short of reading the haines book I haven't had much luck in finding any answers.
Preexisting problems with my transmission consist in a slow fluid leak, but she has about 220k so I’ve taken that as a given. Another background problem is that (I believe) my thermostat is stuck, because my vehicle temperature never gets up where it used to. Just wanted to throw these out there- in case they were a variable and I didn’t know it.
Out of the blue, my Overdrive will turn off (light on) and it doesn’t matter if it is cold/hot, sunny/raining, there is nothing I can do but wait until it decides to go back into normal. I can push the button while it’s doing this and it doesn’t matter. Turn the jeep off/on, it doesn’t help. The ‘Trans over temp’ light comes on a and off with it. This started about 6mos ago, but only happening about 1x a week. Now it is every day. I have to do something, because my commute consists of 80mi on the interstate.
I really appreciate your thoughts and opinions!

If you find out what your overdrive problem is, please let me know. On my way home last night my overdrive wouldn't kick in. I was going 65-70mph and my rpm's were up around 3000. I have the str 6cyl 4.0. with the O/D on/off button.

i drive an xj, so bear with
od prob's can be caused by the kickdown cable being improperly adjusted. do some searching to see the process. its pretty easy. if youve got a leak, then the fluids levels are suspect. make sure you are adding/measuring your fluids well. too much/little will be no good... my .02!
