Default Noise Noise Noise......

OK....96' ZJ I6....When I get on the highway I hear a serious whining noise (wife says its more of a vibration noise..lol) but only when I give it gas...it doesn't matter if i'm going straight or in a curve...it kinda sounds like the middle driver side. I just need to know what I need to look at or what anyone can tell me to remedy this....under 40mph it doesn't do it. So there ya go......thoughts?

My '97 did the same thing. Took it to a garage where they put it on a lift. With one guy inside and the other underneath with a mechanic's stethoscope listening, they took it up to speed and determined it had t-case problems and bad joints in the front drive shaft. After the repairs all was right with my ZJ again!

So is there somthing I can do to kinda pin-point the problem? I really don't have the money to let it sit at a shop while some guy milks the clock to tell me he has no idea....If there are any members close to me maybe could lend a hand...It might help to have someone hear it firsthand.

lol...well I don't have a mechanic since I just moved to NC. I'm a Harley Davidson mechanic by trade and have a garage full of tools and I hate to take anything I can do myself to a mechanic. We are way over priced...lol That doesn't mean that I don't need help though..hence the thread...I'm more familiar w/ the V-Twin than the Jeep...but i'm trying

Does your driveline(either of them) have any movement at the u joints when you have it in park and you try to rotate them with your hand?

x2 on checking your u-joints for play. Also check the fluids in your t-case / trans. Could be somthing as simple as low fluid levels.

The front shaft has play in it the rear does not I also took some pix to post so you guys can see if there is anything "not right". There are a few spots along the driveline that are kindaa leaking but you will see in the pix. The previous owner say he thinks it was geared different from stock but wasn't sure and thats all he said...is there anyway to determine this?

See the bolt missing?

Closer look...

That missing bolt in the CV to pinion mounting flange in front driveshaft has got to be causing some vibrations. In my '97 the mechanic replaced that CV type front shaft and diff. yoke with a complete universal joint type shaft. Change the t-case fluid and see what it looks like. You might get lucky. Mine had to be rebuilt.
