Hey guys, I just replaced my power steering pump 3 times ,original was going out, 1st new one leaked (my fault, didnt replace O ring), 2nd new one worked for a day then quit pumping. Also replaced belt and tensioner while I was at it. So I have a new one in there, no leaks, steering is good, but now I have noise when engine is cold and I accelerate. When Im parked with engine cold and not hitting gas, noise occurs once I hit the stopping point turning wheel left or right. While driving noise goes away when I let off the gas or the Jeep is at operating temp.

Jeep is 97 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 v8 5.2

Air in power steering???

If so how do i get it out? Ive done the turning side to side and opening PS cap a few times but not sure if this does anything.

Could I have used the wrong type of fluid? Im not sure if there is a specific type that should be used. I used name brand from Oreillys

It is a close system the air should be out by now. see if you do not have a air leak on return hose. It is the bottom one with clamp. New pump should not "raise a hell" unless the belt it is too tight and pulling on bearings.

Thanks for the advice Trucker, I'll take a look at that. I'll put a new hose clamp on, the kind that can be screwed. I used the old one that was on there, the pry type.

check the belt tension. if is too much, it will damage the pump. It will make noise if is not tension enough. Push your finger against the belt and you should have small slack.

Update: As I was getting the old PS fluid out of reservoir with plastic turkey baster it shattered. Removed pump and flushed out plastic baster pieces from it, reinstalled with new return hose & hose clamps. PUMP NOT WORKING NOW! Sonofa! Off to find new pump...# 4

its the pits

New PS pump is on and running with no leaks. Steering is good, but that noise was still there. Removed the new belt I had bought, and put the old belt back on, noise is gone now.

I will have to get a new belt on there one of these days so any ideas on a solution? or will I have to buy semi-used belts from now on?! ha!

Get new belt, just different brand. Sometimes groves do not align or have crack and that produce noise.
