Take any make and model of vehicle with many thousands of miles on them and you will find problems. Every make has their own quirks, the Toyota 3.0 V6 has head gasket problems and the 22r will have the timing chain cover sawed throught by the timing chain. Those are just two examples of quirks that Toyota owners have to deal with. Ford explores have ball joint issues and heater blend air door problems. 2006 Chevy and GMC trucks burn up blower motor harnesses. The Ford 6.0 and 6.4 diesels engines are junk with too many problems to list. Jeep is not the only company with problems.
Hey, I'm a noob here and just recently posted about MY Jeep stalling problems.
I got a few replies, but I also posted the resolution. Also, having the right mechanic is the key. I took the Jeep to the local STS and will never bring it back there again. I'm lucky they can fix a tire.
I wound up bringing it to a local independently family owned garage, and the mechanic there was a lot like me. I do service work on residential AC and heating systems, and if I've got a serious head scratcher, I dig deep and try to find the issue, I don't pawn it off on someone else. I ask for help, get advice, and put that knowledge in my back pocket.
This mechanic kept the car for a week - every day I passed the garage and his head was under the hood. He researched and dug deep and did eventually find the problem - using after market parts isn't always best, sometimes you gotta go and buy the real thing. The remarkable thing is, he installed a rebuilt PCM, and it never solved the problem, so he was able to return it and saved me the cost. Any other mechanic would've zonked me for the price of the PCM and additional labor. Not this guy, he charged me only for the day labor and part - actually split the price with me on the part due to him having it for over a week. But he just earned a new customer, and all my vehicles (3 total) will be going to him from now on.
Any other car I would've probably junked. Not this Jeep - and I'm really considering getting another. The 4.0 6 is a great engine, easy to oil change, easy to service. I tried changing the oil on my little Saab and unless you own a garage, its next to impossible to work your way around everything to get to the filter.
