Default New to forum, just bought a 94 Grand Cherokee

Hey guys, first off I am new to the forum and if this is the wrong section I apologize. My Girlfriend and I just bought her younger brother for his birthday a 94' Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 v8. The Jeep has never been wrecked, exterior and interior are in excellent condition. The mileage is 310,000 its the original engine. The Jeep has sat for about a year. I want to perform a high milage tune up. This is what I have planned to do in the next week:
Sparkplugs
Wires
Cap & Rotor
Battery
batt cables
Tran fluid
Transfercase fluid
Front and Rear Diff. Fluid
Oil and Filter
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Drain old and fill with new gas
02 sensor

If I have missed anything that would help my high milage investment please comment.

Next thing is that I tried to start it and was able to get it started, but it will immediately die. If I start it and hold the gas it will stay running but, once I let off the gas it shuts off. Any Ideas? I have yet to look for CEL Codes I will do that on Friday. Also the 4 wheel drive is disengaged where do I start to with this

Welcome to CF! I'd flush and refill the cooling system, and maybe the brake fluid too.
Here's how you can check the codes yourself: http://jeephorizons.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2719

I would check the compression. You should not use the starter, but put wrench on crank and try to turn by hand. A lot of time the rings "size-up" when engine been not in use for long time. The plugs should be remove and WD40( or some other lubricant) should be put into cylinders and then turn by hand. You my still have good rings, but I would check the compression.

if changing the plugs and o2 sensor doesn't fix it it may be that you need to clean the intake out. my jeep did a somewhat similar thing as well... turned out to be carbon build up.

I would buy a bottle or can of seafoam and clean the carbon build up out of the engine. I would also change the oil to a Synthetic blend, instead of conventional oil if it has that many miles on it lol. Damn tho 310k that guy drove the car to hell and back. Seems he took good care of it too if its still running.

K update, first its a 95' 5.2 V8. all time 4 wheel drive (the front shaft has been removed) Not a 94'
I have changed oil
spark plugs and wires
flushed cooling system and put new coolant
Thermostat
radiator cap
Fuel Filter
changed front and rear diff. fluid
transfer case fluid
auto tranny fluid and filter
serpentine belt
Battery
Air Filter
Here are some issues, questions, concerns, and statements.

My temp gauge is reading low about 150ish, I have hot heat, so I am thinking coolant temp sensor? sending unit?

Oil gauge fluctuates after engine is warm I sit at idle its about 30-40 is this normal? driving is about 40-60

I think only 1 of the dash lights work. I can only see tach and odometer, the other bulbs are out. I have not looked in haynes yet but are these hard to replace? also 4wheel drive, gear select, and ac controls lights are out.

When I drive on the interstate the tach sits at 2,250 rpms at 70-75 mph is this normal.

the front Drive shaft has been removed (there is nothing between t-case and front diff) will this do any harm to the Jeep? This Jeep will be driven a lot it is my brother in law's first car. The Jeep will see a ton of miles on the weekend maybe 3-500 miles. He lives about 150 miles from school.

The a/c is not working. The compressor is not coming on, I am not hearing an audible "click" I have check fuse and relay. I replaced relay with ABS. any suggestions?

I really excited about this Jeep. We got it for a steal! Even though it has high miles I can tell it has been taken care of all of the fluids were pretty clean when I changed them. I will post some pics when I am finished!!!

if its all wheel drive the front driveshaft being removed will destroy the transfer case. It prob. already is messed up, that is why it is removed, they are cheap enough at jy.

Clean out the IAC idle air control on the throttle body, and make sure there is fresh gas in it. That right there will cause the stalling issue if off gas.

That oil pressure is about normal.
That tach reading at those speeds is about the same as my '97 ZJ w/5.2L V8, 4-spd. OD auto, and 3.73 gears.

Tiwvr1- how can I tell if the transfer case is damaged? Yes it is all time 4wd. When I changed the fluid it was fairly clean with no metal shavings.

well the Jeep drives I have driven it a total of 100 miles with no issues, at speed ranging from 0-75mph. So if the t-case is destroyed now, what does that mean I just need a new one to have 4 wheel drive. If the t-case is not destroyed what kind of damage will I be facing when it does fail? I am past my budget on this Jeep so I am trying to stay away from spending money on parts

do you hear any t-case noise?. Put drive shaft in and see what happen. You should be able to find one cheap at junk yard. the rpm are ok with 3.73.
Before you put drive shaft in, check the yoke for any movements. It should be solid. There could be reason for missing drive shaft. You my have bad front differential.

What size shaft? What other jeeps/trucks can I pull it off of?
