Default Need help with AC?

I tried charging my air-conditioner and when I hooked up my gauge and started charging the ac it would not take any. So I bypassed the low pressure switchgot the compressor going and it still wouldnt take any. The line going from the charging port back to the evaporator started freezing. Do these systems have an expansion valve? Or is this a sign of needing to replace the evaporator? Any comments will help.. Thanks,.

What year? What engine? My 95GC with a 4.0 has an oriface tube and no sight glass. Icing up usually means there is a restriction at the ice line.
