Default my transfer case is making a noise

well i took my jeep to get looked at and found out the noise is coming from my transfer case and is most likely the chain. Is that something that my husband can get into and fix or is it something for a tranny shop. If a shop has to do it how much can i be looking t to spend. my jeep is a 1998 jeep grand cherokee larado 4.0 .

Easier to swap the case, especially if you have the AWD transfer case. Swap in a NP231 and you will have 2wd for the road.

its the standard trans with the selector for 2 wheel and four wheel. When we got the jeep a few years ago the front drive shaft was already removed from it which makes me think it has been an issue before.

now this will probably be a dumb question but since the front driveshaft is not on the jeep (wasnt on there when we got it) is the chain needed i looked at a blown appart picture and it looks like the chain syncs the front with the rear . can i just have him remove the chain since it will only be using 2wd
