Default My new 1998 Grand Cherokee Transfer Case

This one has the Quadra Drive transfer case that is all time 4x4.
My question is if there a way to convert the all time 4x4 to part time 4x4 ?

Yes, it has been done many times and there are great write-ups.
Not sure what you have, likely the 249 transfer case.
You can swap the 231 or the 242 into your rig.

Great Info. thanks.
Can I drive it with the front drive shaft disconnected in the mean time?

I am not sure about that. How about the details about your rig, which engine and transmission.

You can drive it without the front driveshaft.

I've found that just replacing the fluid in the nv247/249 with the proper mopar fluid that 85-90% of the viscous coupling function returns and it is still drive-able with the front driveshaft installed.

Look closely at the swap DIY's as it is pretty in depth swap. If I remember right you have to swap the input shaft from the 249 into the 242 because of the differences in length.

I heard that prolong driving without front drive shaft will damage the T-case, Is that right?
I have 98 V8 ZJ.

Well if the transfer case is messed up to the point of having to take the front driveshaft out to even drive it you probably can't hurt it anymore then it already is.

Before doing anything with the driveshaft try changing the fluid and see what happens. The best results seem to be change the fluid, drive it a bit 25-75 miles and change the fluid again. In most cases the viscous starts to work pretty good again. However is the viscous is to far damaged then it it may not work. I have had some pretty good experiences with fluid changes. My old 5.9 limited was just starting to act up chirping the tires sometimes on tight turns and I did the above fluid swap and it went back to working like it should. I then changed the fluid every year or 15k miles whichever came first. It continued working as it should until I sold it.

Even if swapping the fluid can get it working again while getting the parts together to do the swap.

Your effort to remove the front drive shaft is to save on fuel economy, correct? If so, data shows this to produce virtually no benefit.

As to whether or not it will damage a transfer case then becomes a rather moot point, but the link above provides the answer to that as well.

^ It's not for fuel economy. Need locking hubs for that.

98 has a revised part# for the viscous coupler, you can safely remove the front shaft. The earlier versions would allow the vehicle to roll in park..

Not for fuel economy, it feels like it binds when i'm turning sharp and the rear tire is skipping.
My thought is to disconnect until I find a 242 to replace.

I've rebuilt that same T-Case. Don't do it, you can mess up your chain and or smoke you bearing on the front shaft side.
