LSD problems?
Hi, wonder if you can help me? Found a grand cherokee 4.0 1996 for sale and it is a very good vehicle in all aspects apart from a query on the rear diff. Although the jeep is fine under normal conditions, im told when it tows a heavy trailer the diff can groan/grind for a few seconds when pulling from a standstill. The seller says this is down the the diff plates and is a common thing, nothing to worry about. Is this normal or is the diff on its way out? The vehicle has done 150,000 miles.

When there is a high torque demand, and one wheel has to slip (turning a corner) you can get a chatter type concern out of the LSD. Chatter becomes more of a problem as the LSD wears out, but you would notice this all the time. There is also an additive that goes into the fluid, to allow the clutches to slip smoothly
