I've got a '95 Grand Cherokee Limited Auto V8 with the quad-trac system.
Almost everytime I turn off the engine, within about two minutes there will be a really loud pop/noise. It only happens once, and it sounds like to me it might the differential? I'm rather familiar with vehicles, but not the 4x4 system.

I can take a video and post it on youtube if that helps?

If you have any input on what this might be or what to check, that would be great! It is my daily driver, and I don't want there to be something wrong with it and I not know it.

So I just got back from doing some running around and got down next to the Jeep immediately after shutting it off. Turns out that its coming from the back half of the vehicle. I noticed while I was down there that the muffler looks like it might be new. Is it possible it could just be the welds on the muffler?

Is it one loud pop, or is it like a series of pops that slowly get quiter as the engine and exhaust cool down?

 

Nope. Just one really loud pop... If any of you have ever fired a green gas airsoft pistol, it sounds kinda like that.
Its almost a click, like something engaging/disengaging. Buts its rather loud... :-/

Definitely not the crackling type sound heard from hot metal.
Again, I could record it if that would be better for determining the noise.
