Default Jeep cherokee problems :(

Hi and my name is dave ,ive been reading on here a few times but now my jeep is playing up !

First off its a 4.0 petrol/lpg 1999 model with lsd 130,000 miles

there is a humming noise for some time from the rear axle but now its struggling to turn tight turns with a juddering skipping from the rear
almost stalling the engine now

I have been told buy the local garage that the LSD diff is broken and im looking at £1000 for replacement !

the cars value is around £600 so its not an option to spend that kinda cash

Is there a way to dissable the rear diff by removing some of it so its FWD until i can find a replacement unit or
rear axle ?

I do not think that you can ride on front as you my mess up your tcase, but
your tcase my be already out. The other option is to check if you do not have 4low engage. It could be in linkage adjustment.

Sounds to me like the rearend was never maintained and the lsd is shot like you said. Honestly you shuld look into another axle, not sure how the market is over the pond for used parts for the xj but you should be able to pick up a used axle for way less than 1000(dont have the euro squiggly). I broke a u joint on my 97 and drove it for a little in 4wd. I can tell you its very inefficent and I bet its not good for the tcase but I dont know for sure. Mine is my beater so needless to say I wasnt worried ab breaking it.

Try and change the rear diff oil and put the stinky additive for the LSD in it. The dealer would be the best place to get the stinky stuff. The stuff is a friction modifier, and it does work as designed, give it a shot.
