Default intermittent groaning....intermittent slight metallic rubbing sound from transfercase

yesterday I noticed an intermittent groaning and metallic sounding noise from the transmission area. When I looked closely at the tranny/transfercase area I noticed a super slow drip from where the transfer case is. It's not dripping like crazy, but it does leave a damp stain on the ground overnight about 8 inches in diameter.

What is usually the culprit here? I may have to take this to my mechanic if my buddy and I cant figure this out.

quick question....I have the NP242 transfercase and was wondering if it has it's own separate fluid from the main transmission. Or is all the tranny fluild a part of my particular TC?

are you asking if type of fluid is different or has separate place to put fluid. not sure if fluid is same, but yes you have to put fluid in trans as well as tc

no, what I mean is does the fluid in the main transmission drain into the the transfer-case? or is the transfer-case totally separated from the main transmission?
