Welcome to the forum.
A 2000 Grand Cherokee is a WJ model designation, while a 1996 Grand Cherokee is a 2nd Generation ZJ.
These are two completely different models.
There is no reason why the 2000 parts will fit into a 1996, but please attempt that and post the results.

Model: Cherokee (XJ)
I'm new to Jeeps. My son has me hooked.
So what year(s) do I need to look for that will interchange with the 96 ZJ to get interior and down the road, exterior parts?

That '96 ZJ is the second generation ZJ. The model year range for those second generation ZJ vehicles is '96 to '98 that have compatible parts.
