Very nice. So I should be able to check those two spots with the voltmeter. If I have nothing, then the NSS needs to be cleaned. If I have continuity, signal, then it is not the NSS. Does that sound correct?

I find it strange that I would have both the Park and Neutral not recognizing the signal at the same time. I guess it is possible that the Neutral connectivity has been out for a while. Since I never start it in Neutral. And now the Park one has also a bad connection.

I have rewatched several videos on removal and cleaning the NSS so I am confident I can do this with a limited amount of swearing. lol

I'll check the voltmeter tomorrow and go from there. I guess I could put a wire between just to see if it will start but I wouldn't want to bypass this. Like I said, it's mostly my wife driving so I don't think bypassing is a good idea for me, but it does look like a good solid test to verify the NSS is bad/ dirty or not.

I see the other diagram below that shows where I should have continuity for each gear. This is perfect to test the NSS before I remove and clean. Thanks. I think I read that thread about 3 weeks ago when all this got started....oh well. I have it bookmarked now. Thanks again, I am starting to feel better already.

 

Quick Update:
Okay, I went out and checked my reverse lights and guess what,...they don't come on in reverse.

I haven't found the connector from the NSS yet to try the bypass test yet but will return to report my findings there.

But the fact that my reverse lights are not working, sure looks like the NSS is the problem.

I can't even find this thing with the vehicle raised. Is this inside the transmission pan on 1998's? Haynes manual is calling it a Park/Neutral Position Switch. Is this the same thing?

My transmission lines are on the drivers side, not the passenger side like all the videos I have watched.

Figure 6.23 in the Haynes manual is hard to tell where this thing is but it appears as if it is inside the tranny pan. (page 7B-8)

I will go take some pictures and maybe you guys can help me locate this part.
Sorry I am such an idiot but I just dont see anything that looks like the NSS on the outside of the tranny. Be back in a moment.

Since i couldn't find the NSS, I decided to try and find the end of the connector.

From the removal and clean tutorial you posted, the connector appeared black.
When I got this off it had 10 spots instead of 8. Is this the right connector?

Oh and for those who are connector challenged like me, the little red thingy slides towards the left in this image and you need to push down the plastic catch at the bottom of connector to get them apart. I also had to use a flathead screwdriver and 2 wrenches to get this thing apart. Good luck.

So if this IS the NSS connector, how am I to read the diagram that shows 8 spots? Notice that 2 of the spots appear to be empty/not in use.

Here is my NSS off my '97........don't think 97 is different from 98.

 

I think there may be some major differences between a V-8 5.2 litre Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 6 and 4 cylinder tutorials and examples. So anyone know where the NSS and ot end connector are on this vehicle, I would appreciate any help locating these parts on my jeep. I'll be happy to take more photos if requested.

 

That looks like every tutorial I have seen. I just can't seem to find one on my jeepjeep. Hmmmm.

Okay here is a shot of my engine compartment. As you can see it looks quite different than the tutorials that have been linked here.

Also adding in my pdc fuse box. The horn relay is removed because otherwise it is on all the time but that is for another discussion.

In red is the connectors location that I was showing earlier.

Rock Auto says this is the NSS for a v-8 5.2 liter. I think I saw something like that on the drivers side near the end of the transmission. Not in the 2 pictures I took. It's getting dark but I can set up a light to see if I can see something like this.

 

Okay drawing a red circle at the end of the tranny where it looks like this part might be.

Sure looks easier than the V6 models to replace and at 1/10th the cost. If this is it of course. What do you guys think?

Part at oreilly verifies it fits this jeep. This link shows a nice top and bottom picture of the part.

Okay, I got this.

Put jeep in park.
Place pan to catch fluid.
Remove connector
Remove NSS. \
Verify the switch operating fingers are centered in the tranny female hole.
Do this by shifting from park to Neutral and visually verifying centered-ness (not a word) This is so it makes a connection on the end piece of the NSS.
Install new seal and then new switch.
plug in connector. Fill with tranny fluid.
See if it starts with key.

Tomorrow. I'll check that the connector is a 3 prong and go from there.
