how do i diagnose check engine light on 1986 Grand Cherokee?
Hello all, I have a 1986 Jeep Grand Cherokee and have a check engine light on which is letting me not pass smog, does anyone know how to diagnose this check engine light??? or know any ways I can pass smog without having to diagnose it as a last resort?

if its OBD1 the just turn the key to the on position and back off 3 time the last time leave it at the on position and it will flash each flash represents a number they will be in pairs with pauses in between the longer pause represents a new number then just search to find the chart that tells you whats what and if its OBDII then take it to autozone or advance or whatever and they can plug it in and read the codes for you then just fix whatever may be wrong

i have a 93 grand i thought was first year but idk
also idk anything about using wires under the dash for anything unless your refering to OBDII which is where you would have to have it plugged in but yours is too old for that

I have a 91.... I bought it for a tow rig... but the fuel milage is soooo awful, I am probably going to use my ZJ for it...
And if it a 86 FSJ its not OBD-I...The check engine light is a like a Renix XJ.. not really a Check Engine light. but an Emissions timer light. Unplug the timer and it goes away.
