Default Help

I got a call by my wife yesterday saying that she was stranded on the side of the road and didnt want to drive our 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee anymore because it was smoking from the tailpipe and she could also smell burning wires... I had it towed to my house so i could go through it, and i could not get it to repeat the problem. I did smell burning wires though, but could not find out where it was coming from. Could it be the Head Gasket? It is not losing any antifreeze though.... all fluids are fine..... I do not want to take it a mechaninc and they tell me something off the wall....

Thanks,

It could be the O2 wire touching the exhaust pipe. How long do you have this car?

it cant be a v6 4.7 its a v6 4.0 or v8 4.7 and it could be the o2 sensor but i think it couldbe the crank seal. and the smell is the crank sensor burning

thanks to the replies guys. First off i got my Aspen motor and the Jeep motor mixed up... sorry for the confusion. Second, where is the crank seal located? Is that just as bad as trying to get the head gasket? Also, if it was a sensor that was burning, wouldnt i get a trouble code? It is electronic isnt it? I am thinking that it may be a stuck caliper on the rear passenger side of the Jeep. I drove it to work today, and i cannot repeat the symptoms that my wife was telling happened. She was driving on a road where there is a lot of stop and go traffic. There is a little bit more wear on this particular rotor than any other on the vehicle.

You have 2 crank seals( main seal) one on front engine and the other oat the end of engine. Leaking oil from any of those seals in most cases, will not produce "burnt oil" effect, unless the oil it is dripping on exhaust. You will notice the dropping oil level. Front main seal can be change with some effort, but rear will require to remove engine or transmition. The "stuck" brake caliper could produce "smoking effect". Any sensor wire damage will alert you with "check engine" lights and produce fault computer code.
