Default Hard shifting from park to drive

Just picked up a 94 zj 4.0 4x4 When I go from park to drive it's kind of a rough shift and clanking noise outside but drives and shifts good when driving down the road or if your stop and go from drive to reverse to will be rough to make noise any ideas? But everything works when in gear just rough putting into gear

my xj has a hard shift into drive as well... I haven't got around to diagnosing the issue yet... I will be curious to see what you find out.

It drives so damn smooth any other time.. I just really havent put alot of thought into it...

How does your transmission mount look? I just crawled under mine tonight, other than being a little "soft" ( i can move the tail of the transmission up and down pretty effortlessly about an 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch..) it doesn't look to be in bad shape..

If you never serviced the tranny you could try flushing it out and putting a new filter and fluid in it.

Sometimes if there's a piece of debris floating around in the fluid, it can hang a solenoid or the valve body.

I had my buddy use a bucket to flush my tranny. It made a huge difference.
