Grinding Noise only with 4WD on

well i cant really lift it becuase i dont have a strong enough jack , just a 1 1/2 ton one i use for cars. it mostly noisy going straight and kinda of quiet on turning left and right. but i thought i can throw her in 4wd anytime i want beucase its select-track and not awd thats what i read around here ?

wish i could help you,or you would find it because it would help me.ive tried everything on mine,its my wifes daily driver so i didnt have time to teat things down to check before i started replacing parts,however after replacing my front diff and transfer case i tore both the old ones apart and found nothing wrong with either.i went the diff rought because i was told they r bad for pinion bearings,when the noise was still there i put it on stands and had my wife run it,sounded like it was coming from transfer so i changed it,still no luck.the front driveshaft was bad,but that didnt cure the problem...good luck,keep me posted and i will do the same

my 90 xj & my 92 had similar noises. turned out the pinion bearings were going bad. to check that is easy...drop the front driveshaft from the axle & grab the yoke & shake the heck out of it. it shouldn't be able to be moved up & down or side to side more than a hair. it was an expensive fix here where i live, so i took that opportunity to upgrade.

HEY DUDES! He just told you the fluid in the front diff was "milky silver and thick"! Sounds like he broke a gear or bearing in the front diff and it's grinding itself to pieces! Probably pinion bearing cause it only makes noise under power.

i think you are right about that.. now whats the price on the the item i need to fix? and is it a easy fix ? i work on cars all the time but not 4wd

i'm also looking at to get the part at the junk yard but not sure what the part is called? is it

DIFFERENTIAL CASE ASSEMBLY FRONT
or get a
DIFFERENTIAL REBUILD KIT FRONT?

but i was also thinking of getting a Front Axle Assy. taking the gears and diff inside out . what you guys think? i cant take it to the shop because of the cost .

i am a decent mechanic & novice fabricator, but when i attempted to replace the pinion bearing WOW! the kits available locally here were like $100 more than on-line. it turned out to be a huge project that i ended up out sourcing. but on the plus side... this is your opportunity to effect any upgrades you have planned! hehehehehe

If you dont have the right tools to do the diff then it would prob be cheaper for you to get a whole front axle assembly from a yard. Rebuilding diffs aren't that hard if you have the right tools

i would like to see bigger tires on there also maybe 31" , since it came with a 2" from the old owner..and the only tools i would need is the bearing press..i was thinking of renting it from autozone if they have one or bring it to a shop for them to press in . and i would be also replacing all my rubbber bushing since i'm down there as well.. well if the job is easyer then replaceing a timing belt then i'll be fine . since i do that from time to time.

If you can do timing belts you should be able to do a diff then. The only thing I think is a pain at times is crushing the crush sleeve but thats why I have a 3ft 3/4in drive breaker bar for

updated again...
a family friend stop by to look at the jeep and we put it on 4 jacks and run the car in 4wd . When it acel its quiet ,but coming slow to a stop u can hear rattleing and sounds like a big bump to switch the car into 4wd .and i hear like a knocking inside the t-case. so i'm guessing my T-case is screw up and not the front diff

IMO you probably be time and money ahead to replace the entire front axle assembly. Just be sure you get one with the same ratio. The hardest part about that swap is the steering linkage, and by that I mean popping the joints apart. Oh, yeah, and bleeding the brakes. Sound easy?

The noise you hear from the t-case is probably just the gears bouncing on backlash as the front axle gears catch and grind.

Don't do anything until you pull the cover on the front diff and see for yourself what's going on, please!

well i'm with you on checking out the front diff. first, i'm hopeing its the front diff then the T-case . but either way i found a t-case at the junk yard for 150 and a diff for 140 so either way i'm going to the junk yard this weekend.
