Please excuse my ignorance but my last experience with 4wd was in a Toyota Land Cruiser about 35 years ago. I just bought a used 1995 Grand Cherokee Limited, having never owned a Jeep before this is a totally new thing for me. The dealer sold it as is. The power windows didn’t work, but thanks to a post by Willys55 I was able to get that taken care of. The question is: What is the correct way to move the 4wd lever to 4 lo? The salesman said that I should be moving slowly. This brought about a lot of grinding noise. That can’t be good. Any thoughts? This Jeep is really sharp! Clean inside and out. A/C is arctic cold. I can’t wait to take it out and get it dirty.

to put it in 4low your supposed to come to a complete stop. now to take it out sometimes the gears have pressure against them because they are binding up so you have to put the lever in 2wd and put it in reverse the back in drive a few times before it will go back into 2wd. but i dont put mine in 4 low at any more than 5 mph and definitely dont do it if it grinds the gears

I don't know if it's the same, but my '97 has the Quadra-Trac system w/4All Time, N, 4LO. The owners manual says "Never switch between 4All Time and 4LO above 2-3 MPH as transfer case damage may result. To shift into 4LO, shift transmission to neutral, then shift transfer case firmly and quickly to 4LO without pausing in transfer case neutral. The indicator lamp should light "LO" when the t-case lever is moved to 4LO position. And when going from 4LO back to 4All Time shift firmly and quickly without pausing in transfer case Neutral".
Hope this is helpful.

You should have read the owners manuel and not listen to the dealership. When you change to 4lo or anything for that matter you should always have the vehicle at a complete stop and put the car into neutral. Then change the Jeep to whatever you want and then go back to drive. The manuel says to not go over 2-3 mph when changing to 4lo..
Hopefully that grinding noise you heared didnt **** up the transfer case.

Thanks, Ol' Blue. Your suggestion worked well. Everything seems to be working okay in that department. I have ordered one of the Hayden manuals for the Jeep. Because after 15 years the owners manual is long gone. Now all I have to do is figure out how to make the dash lights work and life will be good.
