Default Full time 4 wheel tires

Hey Jeep people first time on the forum. I just picked 94 limited low miles but a little ruff. I'm getting mixed opinions about tires for full time 4 wheel drive. Do the tires have to be exactly the same or just the same size. JeepguyDon

the tread shouldnt matter as long as the size is the same. That being said i wouldn't run a mud terrain on one tire and an all terrain on the other

Yes they do have to be the exact size, well within a couple 32nds. In fact if you have a brand new spare and four tires that are worn 50% and you have to use the spare on one of the axles, you can severely damage the transfer case. This is because the TC will sense the difference in wheel speed and try to apply extra power to the non-slipping wheels since the wheels are not slipping it will over heat the TC and destroy the viscous coupler and/or the georotor pump depending on if you have a 247 or 249 TC.

Do some searches anything that has AWD must have same size tires with same amount of wear. This is why the any of the Quadratrac/drive systems in jeeps come with a fullsize spare on a matching rim versus a cheap steel rim like my selectrac spare because you are suppose to rotate the tires and swap the spare in at each rotation keeping the wear on all the tires with in 6000 miles of each other.

There are lots of outstanding tires you can install on your jeep depending on purpose.... Appropriate size should be followed for excellent handling...

TSC is correct. The 249 AWD Grand Cherokee T-case is EXTREMELY sensitive to different tires, and will eat the vicous coupler in a very short time. It is very important that you rotate your tires regularly as well. I had to replace the 249 in my ZJ, and lets just say they are not cheap!!
