Dull hiss coming from the rear of my 1997 GC

Dull hiss coming from the rear of my 1997 GC
I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee TSI. Full-time 4WD.
Under normal driving, there's kind of a dull hiss that comes from the back of the vehicle. It drives fine, but the sound is annoying.
I was thinking something is wrong with the rear diff, but then it occurred to me today that the sound is exactly like water traveling through a pipe.
Could this be the fuel pump, or am I just trying to rationalize away a really expensive rear axle repair?
