Is Dipstick Accurate?

Is Dipstick Accurate?
2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4.7 L 143k
The Jeep calls for 6 qtrs. of oil. After I change my oil I take the jeep out for a ride. Later on I check the oil, eveytime the oil level is about a qtr of an inch over the fill line on the dipstick. Over the next few days I check it again, same result? Why? On any other car I ever owned the oil level was perfect right on the line.....
Maybe I am use to owning Japanese Cars?
