Whoops, think this should go here....
Hi folks,
Just been gifted a non-working 97 grand cherokee laredo 2.5 td. It had a heating problem (big hole in pipe!) and had been sitting for 6 months. But with a couple of jubilee clips and some 1" hose this problem was all sorted.
Unfortunately after getting it taxed and MOT'd (live in UK) got 350 miles towards home (Scotland), was sitting on cruise comfortably on the motorway and starting to feel smug, when a terrible grinding noise got louder than the NIN on the stereo.
Pulled over, AA said gearbox dead and they dragged me home. (On inspection there's oil drops on back of car - think a seal went pop somewhere on the run, ran out of lube and the car decided that if I wasn't going to help it, it wasn't going to help me!).
Am now looking for a second hand gearbox and transfer box, but a breaker here suggested that there were several transfer boxes used on this model, this year (97).
Anyone know if I'm being spun a yarn? as he's not got the cheapest gearbox/transfer box combo on the interweb and I dont want to spend £500 on something that doesn't fit.
Were several transfer boxes used? or could I buy a separate gearbox and transfer box from different breakers, without concern?
Cheers
Bort
PS. Loved the ride that I got (albeit a bit shorter than I'd hoped) and really want to keep the vehicle because I like it (apart from that infernal immobiliser - any way that can be ripped out?). Hoping to get it up and running for winter.
PPS - Mods, if I've put this in the wrong place - sorry, and feel free to put it where it should be - I just wasn't sure where to post..

I know on the gas powered ones there were a few diffrent transfer options, Is it manual or automatic? I would think it is just the transfer that is bad, all that oil is porbably from one of the chains snapping and going through the case.

I would have to agree if it was dtill moveingI assume the gear box is still good so the transfer is probably your problem(a few different used)
Hi guys.
Thanks for your very useful info. very encouraging if its not the whole kit and caboodle that's dead and possibly just the transfer box - that's not quite so expensive on its own, if I can get the right one!. Do you know how I could easily check? It's a manual diesel.
The problem I have is that my friendly mechanic doesn't want a stationary vehicle blocking up his ramp, so he would rather I had the parts ready to go in straight away when he drops the old stuff out.
However, form your encouraging comment, maybe best if I let him drop the old out, then tow my car away (sans gearbox and transfer box) and tow it back when someone has looked at the boxes. Do you reckon that could be a money saving plan??
cheers

PS - having started it up and putting it into reverse gear (just to let someone hear how it sounds - not lifting clutch off) however, now I cant shift the gearstick out of gear - do you still think it sounds like just transfer problem??

hi all,
Right - now been informed that it's definately the gearbox that's dead. been offered one with part number 52109021 AB. Problem is - I can't find the part number on what's currently on the car- to see if it's the same.
i understand ther was a change from the AX5 to AX15 in 1997 (1997 is the registered year of the car, but could be a 1996 manufacture??). Does anyone know where the part number on the gearbox is printed? I cant see it from underneath the car, in the dark, with a torch.
Alternatively - transfer box has tag with 'model: 231 J; assembly number:5209 9120'; serial number: 414972; ratio:272' and clutch housing has number 703057 - can anyone fill in what gearbox number would be with this set-up?
Any help greatly appreciated - dont really want to buy and have to sell gearbox if it's the wrong one - postage to scottish highlands isnt cheap!!
thanks folks
