Swapped one on a 98 and all we used was a front drive shaft from an earlier ZJ with the u-joint type and the yoke off the axle.

As stated, it's a direct swap. Just use the yoke from the front diff. and the front shaft. I used the type 1 shaft because it has u-joints, and a grease fitting on the slip yoke in the shaft. The type 2 has the u-joints and a slip-yoke in the shaft but no grease fitting. The type 3 is the CV type with an adjustment and locknut in the shaft.
It would be a good time to replace the pinion seal if it's leaking. When you remove the pinion nut and remove the CV yoke, just remove and replace the seal, then install the u-joint yoke and pinion nut.
