Default cv axle

wonder if it is possible to remove the cv axle shaft that goes from the transfer case to the front differential and still drive?
The shaft is bad (make a clunking sound). Have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 with Quadra- trac transmission.
Please help....

The noise is like a grinding sound( reminds me of a bad bearing). Goes away when I make a turn. Looked underneath and saw that the cv axle from the transfer case to the differential seemed to be slipping out of the differential(if that's possible). Haven't removed the cover yet... Shaft looks bad, though. Need to replace it but wanted to know if it can be driven while I search for another one. Should I expect any more problems?
Thanks again.

Just so you know that's a drive shaft not an axle.

Thanks for the heads up, Marc, but do you know if I can drive sans the 'driveshaft' until I can locate another one?

Thanks. Can I do the same to my cv axle shafts? What year will fit or do I have to use parts from a '98?

If your t-case is good shape it shouldn't hurt but I've seen one's that are worn out (AWD models) that will roll in park with the front drive shaft out.
You can swap your front axle shafts with Cherokee and Wrangler shafts with u-joints from any D30 without a CAD. The best versions came in 95 and newer, they have D44 size u-joints and will work with ABS if you have it. Some Grands have the u-joint shafts as well so check them in jys too.

Good to know ahead of time what to expect, my driveway is on a hill.
Also have the ABS so this helps me know what to look for.
Thank you marc, this should help a lot.

Thanks for the follow-up...Am planning on changing out the cv axle and shafts and going with the u joints. Found a couple of '97 Grands on line at a yard nearby. Hope the parts are still there; won't be able to get there 'til the week-end.

Co-worker says the parts must come from a '98 grand as I have. says the only way I can use '97 parts is to replace the front as well as the rear axles (says '98 won't go with '97 or visa versa. Must use same year parts)
Ever heard of anything like that?
Gave me a reason that the axle would not be in sync if the weren't the same....

93-98 will work, 99 and up won't. You can even use fronts out of XJs and TJs because they have the same brackets.
