Just picked up a decent 96 ZJ to replace my 92 XJ as a DD. Anyway, driving it home, steering felt nice and tight as far as the front end goes...but the column itself moved up and down about 3/8 to 1/2 inch. Is this a common problem on ZJs? Is the column as easy to replace if needed as on an XJ? Truck has 192K on it.

Not something I hear many complaints about. Is it the whole column, or just the upper part w/the steering wheel? If it's the former, you can tighten the mounting bolts under the trim panel and kneeblocker of the dash. The latter, and it could be a worn/damaged tilt mechanism. The pivot pins inside the column should not be removed as damage to the column will result. Maybe a previous owner incorrectly attempted a repair and the column was damaged.
Except for switches, wiring, shrouds, steering wheel, and the lock cylinder, the column is a non serviceable item. If damaged, it should be replaced as an assembly.

The column should be as easy as replacing one in an XJ.
